USA wins match against all stars, 40-33
Asst. Coach Adam Hodges for USATH June 07, 2009
The US squad made it two in a row Sunday with a victory over a squad of all-star players from the local area clubs. Played in front of a raucous crowd in a gym in Ratekau, the Americans used pressure defense and their athleticism to push the pace early, opening up an early lead that it never relinquished. Gary Hines led all scorers with 10 goals, including several spectacular fast breaks and one especially exciting 'ally-oop.' Not to be outdone, Jordan Fithian got his first ever 'ally-oop' goal with the assist going to Adam Elzoghby on a broken play fast break. Nearly every player on the American squad reached the scoring column, with 14 tallying goals during the balanced attack.
Apart from the results of the games on the scoreboard, the US squad made good impressions on the locals. The referees for all the contests were Bundesliga referees who regularly officiate first division and international matches. They told said the team had the best attitude (respect of opponents and officials, not arguing calls, etc.) in the tournament and one of the best that they have seen in all their officiating duties. The tournament has seen lots of hard-hitting defense, but it has been clean and fair. The US squad has represented America with pride and honor.

Folks, the game against TSV Ratekau was fantastic to watch. Thank you Team USA... I think Gary Hines is going to rewrite Team Handball as the Germans have known it. The crowds went wild as Gary went in to virtually climb air to throw. He, as well as the rest of the players showed great sportsmanship, charm and team fairness towards their opponents, the sudden fans and especially to me, Sophie and (Dachshund)Tex. I overheard the Germans sitting around me make several positive comments about you all. Go Team USA!!!! It was a long drive from Munich to Luebbeck and back... but it was worth it. Hope to see more of you all. Please contact us when you are in Bavaria next... I'd like to turn you loose on our local Handball club... show them a few things. I've been teased for years... about Americans and Handball... We'll show 'em. ;-) Bleib euch in kontact. Pedra, Sophie and Tex (wuf)
